TOP TIPS FOR COMMUNICATING WITH PEOPLE WITH APHASIA

It can be challenging to communicate with people with aphasia, so I have provided some top tips to help below:

1. Write down key words
2. Say one thing at a time
3. Relax – be natural
4. Recap – check you both understand
5. Don’t pretend you understand
6. Don’t rush – slow down, be patient
7. Draw diagrams or pictures
8. Reduce background noise
9. Ask what helps, e.g. some people would prefer that others don’t finish their sentences for them
10. Use pen and paper

The most important thing is to remember to give the person extra time to get their message across - if you remember to be patient and take your time, it will go a long way.
